Money is certainly tight but i want to fulfill this wish and take her but im finding trouble finding dirt cheap airfare. I am looking to fly out on Sept 23rd and return Oct 2nd. Everyone tells me i should have no trouble finding airfare under $500 but i certainly cant find anything. If anyone can help I would certainly appreciate it!!!! Thanks!!!

one more quick question…if we are at 1000 right now….is this the best time to buy? or do i roll the dice and hope there are lower fares at a later date?

Well, David, it really depends WHERE you can fly from, and how long you plan to stay. Edit your question to add this info, and you will likely get much better answers.
———– updated, thanks for adding your itinerary
I don’t think you’ll get Florida to Italy in September for $500; maybe in January or February, but not in September because it’s still warm, and it’s still peak travel season for southern Europe. Plus, current fuel surcharges are adding $120-$150 or more to transatlantic roundtrips. Right now, cheapest looks like $1004 per ticket on USAir.
Normally I would advise flying via an intermediate city, and add a second roundtrip to and from GOA. Via NYC or LON, for example. However, I’ve been checking for you, and right now that doesn’t look like it saves you much.
Consider checking airfare consolidators such as Flights.com, Economytravel.com, and Justfares.com. These might be 15-20% cheaper than the published fares. But in a nutshell, $500 isn’t realistic for this itinerary with September outbound.
————— second update, re: purchase timing
It is *possible* to get tickets maybe $600-$700, but it is VERY risky, because as I said before, September is still peak season (highest demand, highest fares) to southern Europe. The worst that could happen is that fares at the cheapest levels ($1000+ currently) sell out, and you’re left with only more expensive seats. I guess it becomes a gamble–willing to risk saving, say, $700 (350 per ticket), or have it go up by the same amount, or lock in now.

I know that you want to get your travel plans done right now, but here is the thing you are going to pay top dollar if you get your tickets so soon! I would wait till june to purchase your ticket it might cost a bit more then 500, im going to say about 600 with taxes and all. I would go to alitalia or continental airlines. Fly to MILAN its the cheapest airport to fly into in italy and then just take the train to genova. Its not more then 2 hours.

I have a little travel blog that will help you find the cheapest airfare! Use the Kayak search bar on the right side to find the cheapest airfare!
There are also some post on the blog that should answer some of your questions about travel to and around Europe! Good Luck!
