I am looking for some discounts to flying. Anyone know of any tricks? Is flying “stand by” still an option?

Flying stand by only works if your flight is booked and you have to see if there is an open seat.. and you’ll still pay the full fare. you can’t buy stand by seats.
Try the discount carriers like airtran, southwest but sometimes best deals come from larger airlines so check all websites regarding your flight, such as Orbitz, Expedia(they charge reservation fee for airfare so don’t use them) and also the airline’s websites.. etc.. good luck.

Booking in advance is always better than waiting till the last minute. Occasionally you can get a really good deal the day before a flight by using one of the online booking sites like Priceline or Orbitz but this is not too common any more.
Book your travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays as these tend to be the “quietest” days for travel and the fares are a bit lower. Also check into Saturday morning flights— for some routes, this is a good discount time to travel. Look for flights outside of peak business travel periods; that’d be midday for shorter flights, or late evening for long-hauls. Less demand means lower fares. Make sure you check airfares from all airports close to your home and destination— there are three airports “near” my home and there’s usually a difference of $50 or more depending on where I leave from.
For hotels… if you are not picky and don’t mind taking a chance on staying somewhere a little further away from your destination or somewhere a little less “fancy”, wait till closer to your trip to book. Hotels do tend to lower rates as a way to “move” unsold rooms. This won’t work for popular tourist destinations (Vegas, Miami, LA, anywhere near a beach in the summer) and if you are staying more than a few days, this might not be a good idea because you may not find any single hotel that has a room for your entire week if you wait till a few days before.
Look into package deals— most airlines offer these as do the major travel sites like Expedia. You usually save money by booking the flight and hotel (and car, if you need one) together. You may not have as many choices in hotels when booking a package so your bottom line may be the same as booking things separate but you get a nicer hotel.
Consider buying an Entertainment book— pretty much all major US cities have their edition and you can get them online. They’re full of coupons that may help you get a better deal on a hotel or car (not usually any use on the airfare though) and also discounts for local attractions and restaurants.
If your dates are flexible, sign up for the “deal alert” emails from the various airlines. If you just want to go to Chicago for a weekend and don’t care what weekend, sooner or later you’ll get that fare on sale and those are usually really good discounts.

I am booking a trip to Vegas tomorrow. When I checked online I found that by picking a couple of strip hotels and looking at their online calendars there were very specific weeks that seemed a lot cheaper than others. So start by picking a cheap week to visit. Visit during the week because it is cheaper than the weekend. Use a site like Expedia.com and book the flight and the hotel together for a special discount.

For airfare, play around with these…
