How To Slash The Price of Airfare For Your Children

Fiona Beckett asked:

Several airlines offer great savings on children’s flights. To avoid disappointment though, you must speak directly to their reservations desk. If you care to avoid any travel disappointment, keep a log of names, dates and times.

During certain times of the season special deals can be found on the Internet. Don’t be fooled, the best ticket prices may not always be found on websites. But what I am saying is if you want to get the best airfares, you may have to dig around, online and offline.

Find the airlines that are kid/family friendly. For instance, with specific Disneyland deals, your children can fly certain airlines for five dollars each. Can you believe that? For a family of five, including parents, that represents a huge savings on airfare alone! You have to hunt and ask questions in order to get these deals.

Talk to your Travel Agent; airline tickets for children can get pricey. Travel Agents know that. What they do is they purchase a block of tickets at an inexpensive rate. They turn around and sell those tickets to you at a low price. That low price however, still allows them to make a clear profit for themselves. Everybody comes out smiling.

Always be on the look out for discount rebate offers. Again, your Travel Agent may hold the key here. Certain travel organizations link up with various cities and together they sometimes offer as much as two hundred and fifty dollars off for children. Some of these types of program offer less, but they do offer something.

Helpful Tips And Advice On How To Get The Best Discount Airfare For Your Next Vacation Or Trip

Tim Gorman asked:

If you take the time to look around, you’ll discover that there’s a fare war going on between airlines, travel agents and Internet sites all offering discounted airfares. With some patience and some research, you’ll be able to find a site offering the best discount airfare. Plus, if you travel regularly, you’ll soon discover the best places to visit and cut down your research time enormously.

A great place to start is at the airline websites. It helps if you know which airlines fly to your intended destination, particularly smaller airlines. Most airlines offer a discount if you buy your tickets from their site. Often you can get the best prices direct from the airlines, but not always. Check out the types of fares being offered around your intended travel date, and make a note of them.

Some sites take the travel information that you input, then head off and search the databases of all the major travel sites to find the best fares. They often search airline sites as well. This is much easier than visiting each site individually. So check out Kayak.com and Sidestep.com and see what they come up with. The only problem is that some of the bigger sites, such as Travelocity.com, have been losing to traffic to these search sites and so have refused access to their databases. So you may need to visit some of the bigger travel sites such as Expedia or Orbitz and check out their discounted airfares.

It can also be helpful to check fare prices over the period of a couple of days, and at different times of the day. So you might check at 8am one day, 4pm the next and 10pm at night as well. Sometimes a flight that was at normal price in the morning will have been discounted by as much as 50% that evening. The only problem is that you have to spend a lot of time checking fares, and there’s an element of luck involved. This type of discount fare usually gets snapped up very quickly, so you may find it’s a lot of work for nothing.

Another great way to get the best discount airfare is to be flexible in your travel dates and times. There are certain days of the week when fares are generally cheaper, so if you can search across a range of dates you have a better chance of finding a discount airfare. You can also try traveling during the off peak or lean season, when airlines are struggling to fill seats. It’s also a good idea to book as far ahead as possible, to have the biggest range of discount airfares to choose from.

How to Find Bereavement and Family Emergency Airfares

Susan Kohlback asked:

When an unexpected death or medical emergency befalls a loved one far away, it is often very challenging to find and purchase an emergency airline ticket. It has always been the custom for airlines to charge the highest prices for tickets bought at the last minute, and even more if you don’t know exactly when you will be returning.

For many years the airlines have offered bereavement airfares, but unfortunately most airlines have eliminated or dramatically reduced their family medical emergency and bereavement airfares in the past year. The airlines claim that competition has affected the marketplace so much that they just can no longer afford to reduce ticket prices any further. Really? We all know that last minute tickets with a flexible return date can often cost $1,000 or more! Thankfully three major US airlines are still committed to assisting folks during family medical emergencies. They are American Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and United Airlines.

Here are the steps you need to take to secure a bereavement or family medical emergency reduced rate airline ticket:

1) You must phone the airline’s reservation department. Contact American Airlines at 800-433-7300, Northwest Airlines at 800-225-2525, or United at 800-241-6522. Information for this type of ticket does not exist online. Airlines don’t even admit they have such fares on their websites! Tell the reservation agent that you need a medical emergency or bereavement reduced rate airline ticket and what the circumstances are.

2) You must be an immediate family member – sister, brother, parent, child, grandchild etc. If you have extenuating circumstances, by all means explain them to the agent, they have been known to bend the rules from time to time.

3) The airline agent will verify the information you are telling them, so have the following information at hand for verification: Your relative’s full name, Name and phone number of the funeral home
or Name and phone number of the hospital or medical facility, Name and phone number of the attending physician.

Flights should be able to be booked in the course of one phone call, so be prepared with your desired dates and times of travel before placing the phone call. If the first agent you speak with does not seem able or willing to deal with your request, end the call and dial in again. Finally, you may want to check on Priceline.com, Kayak.com and with low cost carriers that serve your area to see what a standard ticket would cost. You may find that there is a less expensive option available online than with a reduced rate bereavement ticket.
